6 reasons you need to see Starlight Express

First opening in March 1984, Starlight Express was an instant hit with audiences across the world and ran in the West End until 2002. Now, the acclaimed Andrew Lloyd Webber musical is back in the immersive setting of the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre, delighting modern audiences with a set of contemporary twists. But what makes this a must-see spectacle?

1. Immersive theatre

Previously, Starlight Express has always been shown in a traditional setting, with the action occurring in front of the audience on a proscenium stage. In the latest production, however, the train tracks weave around the auditorium, plunging visitors into the very heart of the story and making you feel like part of the race. The actors whiz so close that you could almost reach out and touch them.

2. Iconic songs

Andrew Lloyd Webber theatre productions are known for their catchy tunes. From upbeat classics such as ‘Light at the End of the Tunnel’ and heartfelt ballads like ‘Only You’ to the show’s new rap song ‘Hydrogen’, which highlights climate change, Starlight Express is packed full of iconic numbers. Each draws you into the story as Rusty and his peers race to become the fastest engine in the world. Whatever your musical preferences, this production is sure to captivate you.

3. Roller skating action

Starlight Express has the unique feature of being performed entirely on roller skates. Not only will you enjoy the memorable songs and dazzling choreography that the musical is known for, you’ll be amazed by the ability of the cast to do it all on skates. There are some fantastic stunts too, which push the boundaries of stagecraft even further.

4. Celebration of diversity

When Starlight Express made its West End debut, it broke ground with its diverse casting and at one point was hiring more Black actors than any other show in the West End. Today, it continues to celebrate diversity, with new songs such as ‘I Am Me ‘highlighting the theme of self-acceptance. This production also features gender-swapped characters, with Greaseball - originally performed by a male - being a female character played by queer actor Al Knott. The production is also the professional debut for many of the cast members, giving a platform to new talent.

5. Inspirational story

In Britain we love an underdog, and that’s exactly what Rusty is. As a steam train with the odds against him, he has to employ perseverance and self-belief in order to compete. But the story also explores the importance of kindness and, in this updated version, the need for sustainable energy. Overall, it delivers a positive, heart-warming message that’s sure to leave you feeling good.

6. Spectacular production design

Starlight Express has always been known for its visually commanding sets and costumes, but the latest production takes things to a new level. Tim Hatley’s set design, combined with Howard Hudson’s lighting design, is both stunning and functional, with vibrant colours, video projections and pyrotechnics all creating a feast for the senses. Meanwhile, costume designer Gabriella Slade works wonders, giving the cast a bright and futuristic look.
