Written in 1981 by master composer Jerry Herman and his colleague Larry Alford, Jerry’s Girls is a musical revue based on the songs Herman wrote for women throughout his career. It premiered on Broadway in 1985 and featured award-winning stage performers Leslie Uggams, Dorothy Loudon and Chita Rivera. Now enjoying a limited run in London, the show is a lively celebration of the optimistic and soulful melodies from Herman’s hit musicals. Featuring songs from Hello, Dolly!, Mame, Mack & Mabel, and La Cage Aux Folles, it’s sure to delight both Herman devotees and audiences who are new to his work. Three key cast members light up the stage, representing three generations of performers. Let’s take a look at them.
Famed for her television work, Jessica studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama before becoming an impressionist on the fringe circuit. She soon landed a regular role in the satirical puppet show, Spitting Image and spent several years doing impressions before being cast as Dorothy in a touring production of The Wizard of Oz. Her other stage credits include Mack & Mabel, South Pacific, Sweeney Todd, and Spamalot. She has been nominated for two Off West End Awards for her work. In addition to Spitting Images, her television work includes appearances on Doctor Who, Royal Variety Show and Bobby Davro’s TV Weekly. She has also created two full-length graphic novels.
A musical theatre veteran, Cassidy Janson has had an illustrious stage career with appearances in hit West End shows. She joined the cast of Wicked in 2006, after which she played Kate Monster/Lucy the Slut in Avenue Q. After appearing in several Off-West-End shows, she returned to play Carole King in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. This was followed by a role in the 2018 revival of Chess, in which she was cast alongside Michael Ball and Alexandra Burke. In 2020, Janson won an Olivier Award for her portrayal of Anne Hathaway in & Juliet at the Shaftesbury Theatre. Janson’s return to the Menier Chocolate Factory as a cast member for Jerry’s Girls is something of a homecoming; her first major stage appearance was here, playing Susan in a 2005 production of Tick, Tick… Boom!
An Australian actress based in London, Julie Yammanee has appeared in a range of productions, both on and off the West End stage. Her credits include Aladdin, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Bonnie and Clyde in concert, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella and a part as Miss Geist in the world premiere of Clueless.
