Kick off your New Year with these must-see shows in January

When the Christmas cheer gives way to a dull January, it can be easy to get into a slump. But having something to look forward to will help you stay optimistic even on the darkest mornings. Here’s our list of must-see theatre shows in London, which are sure to stave off the winter blues.

Titanique

A fun-filled show for fans of Céline Dion, this musical parodies the 1997 Oscar-winning film Titanic, retelling the story from the perspective of the Canadian popstar. Dion hijacks a museum tour to share her version of what happened that fateful night - and to share her greatest hits, including ‘My Heart Will Go On’, ‘All By Myself’ and ‘To Love You More’. This theatrical voyage is full of nostalgia, heart and camp chaos.

9 December 2024 - 2 March 2025, Criterion Theatre

Here You Come Again

A joyful musical comedy, Here You Come Again features all of Dolly Parton’s greatest hits, woven into a story about a diehard Dolly fan whose fantasy version of the songstress gets him through trying times. Witty and charming, this show is sure to make you smile with its uplifting themes and iconic music.

Starlight Express

Family-friendly fun abounds in this smash hit musical, which was one of the best West End plays of the 20th century and has been updated for a modern audience. Telling the story of Rusty the steam train’s bid to become the fastest engine in the world, it’s packed with catchy songs and breathtaking choreography, on a set that puts the audience right at the heart of the action.

Shen Yun

Embark on a journey through 5,000 years of China’s cultural heritage in this spectacular show. Timeless legends and ethnic traditions are brought to life through classical Chinese dance, with some pieces touching on the experience of modern day Chinese citizens. Complete with vibrant costumes and interactive sets, it promises a night of inspiring, courageous beauty.

What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank

Based on Nathan Englander’s 2011 short story, this ‘serious comedy’ explores themes of Jewish-American identity: religious versus cultural identity, conflicting ideas of home and - having been updated since 2023 - the war in Gaza. Set in the kitchen of a couple’s Florida home, it’s smart, funny and thought-provoking.

20 January 2024 - 18 February 2025, Marylebone Theatre

Second Best

Marking the stage debut of Asa Butterfield (Sex Education), Second Best is the story of Martin Hill, who as a ten-year-old narrowly missed out on being cast as Harry Potter. Now approaching fatherhood, he reflects on fate, near-misses and life’s twists and turns. A playful, poignant comedy, it’s based on the novel by David Foenkinos and is sure to resonate with those who have ever wondered about the path not taken.
