Uniting circus skills, comedy and cabaret burlesque, Sabrage is bringing a one-of-a-kind entertainment experience to London this season. This opulent, cheeky show is being hosted at Lafayette, King’s Cross, until 6 July 2025 and is one of the most sensual and salacious London shows around. Featuring physical comedy, juggling, aerial artistry and more, it’s set to have audiences laughing and gasping in equal measure. But what’s the story behind Sabrage - and what can you expect?
The Sabrage theatre show is named after the ceremonial practice of opening a Champagne bottle with a sabre. This tradition, dating back to the Napoleonic era of the early 19th century, is as dramatic and theatrical as it is skillful.
Napoleon himself is said to have had a particular love of Champagne, having befriended Jean-Rémy Moët (grandson of renowned Champagne producer Claude Moët) while at military school. He is supposed to have stocked up on cases of the drink before every military campaign, famously saying, “Champagne! In victory one deserves it, in defeat one needs it.”
The story goes that, having defeated the Prussian army in the spring of 1808, Napoleon and his armies returned home through the Champagne-Ardeche region. Villagers lined the streets, offering up bottles to the officers as they rode by on horseback. But opening a Champagne bottle in the standard way was impractical while in the saddle, so these young, bold soldiers used their sabres to slice the top off in one swift motion. The practice represented the precision and fearless spirit of the cavalry - and made it the perfect title for the show.
On arrival at Lafayette, you’ll step into a realm of decadent old-world glamour and Louisiana charm. Ahead of the production you can relax with hand-crafted cocktails and a delectable menu of Southern bar bites before settling into your seat for the spectacle. If it’s VIP treatment you’re after, book the package that includes entry to Nola’s secret speakeasy, two drinks tokens, canapés and a unique photo opportunity with the performers.
The entertainment is hosted by double act Rémi Martin and Spencer Novich, who will both delight and surprise you with their own routines between introducing other international talent, from astonishing juggler Emma Phillips to aerialist Kimberley Bargenquast. Expect a healthy dose of audience participation too: some members will be invited on stage, while many will be showered with feathers during the saucy pillow fight. Sit in the stalls and you might even have your Champagne flute filled from the air. There’s an undeniable party atmosphere, with audience members encouraged to eat, drink and take pictures galore to remember their night.
