Opening on 24 January 2025 at Riverside Studios in Hammersmith, Second Best is an all-new stage adaptation of the bestselling novel by David Foenkinos. Marking the stage debut of acclaimed screen actor Asa Butterfield (Sex Education), it is a playful yet poignant comedy that explores life’s ‘what ifs’ and the moments that shape us. Here, we look at what you can expect from the story.
The novel tells the story of fictional character Martin Hill, who narrowly misses out on fame and fortune. In 1999, ten-year-old Martin is hanging about on a film set where his dad works when he is spotted by British film producer David Heyman. In the midst of casting for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Heyman notices that Martin has the perfect appearance for the role of Harry. During a hastily arranged screen test, it turns out he’s also a natural actor. Martin is on the brink of stardom - one of the two final contenders for the eponymous hero - but of course, he loses out to Daniel Radcliffe. So begins the devastated boy’s struggle with his feelings of failure as Potter fever sweeps the globe.
The novel details the trajectory of Martin’s life as he moves into adulthood. Along the way his father dies, a date ends in disaster because of Harry Potter, and therapists attempt to free him from his obsession with the life that could have been. His issues become an increasing problem - and he tries almost everything to find a solution. Throughout the narrative, Foenkinos explores questions of success and failure, self-compassion and luck, considering them with humour, simplicity and heart, and always highlighting the grandeur of small things.
In the comedy live show we find Martin, now an adult, about to embark on the biggest adventure of his life - fatherhood. This presents a new rollercoaster of emotions to navigate, and as he does so he’s pulled back to that critical moment when his life changed forever.
You don’t need to be a Harry Potter fan to enjoy the ups and downs of Second Best. Written by award-winning playwright Barney Norris, the play is rather an exploration of Martin’s reflections on the ‘what ifs’, the relationship between fathers and sons, and the universal experience of plans going awry. With only one cast member, played flawlessly by Butterfield, it offers a unique, funny and moving experience for London audiences.
This touching comedy live on stage is running from 24 January to 22 February 2025. Described by Asa Butterfield as ‘in equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking’, it’s the perfect show for those who have ever wondered about the road not taken.
