When the musical Priscilla, Queen of the Desert came to London it proved an instant hit thanks to its sense of fun and its positive portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters and themes. Those who loved the stage show are sure to enjoy a new immersive theatre experience in the Soho district of London. If you’re ready to dust off your wig and don your heels, don’t miss Priscilla the Party, a celebration of all things drag.
But before you rush out the door, you may need to brush up some of your disco moves. Here are seven favourites that will ensure you fit right in on the dance floor.
This iconic move was popularised by John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever and focuses on the hips and one hand. Extend the index finger of your chosen hand then move your arm up and down in a diagonal movement. As you do so, thrust your hips from side to side.
Another staple of disco dancing, the double arm swing involves moving your arms up and down alternately, with one going up and forward as the other goes down and back. On the second count, you bend the knee of the arm going upwards and thrust your hip out towards the arm going down.
The snap or ‘hip check’ focuses on the hips and has a sensual feel. Start with your feet in line with your hips, then shift your hips to the right and snap the fingers of your right hand. Then shift your hips to the left , bend your knees and swing your hips to the right again with another finger snap. Straighten and begin again.
Those dancing with a partner can perform this fabulous move. Swing one side of your hip towards your partner, who will do the same so that your hips bump. Then quickly swing your body to the opposite direction and bump the other side of your hips together.
One of disco’s silliest moves - and therefore one of the most fun - the funky chicken involves bending your arms and the elbows and clenching your fists to make a wing shape by your lower ribs. You then ‘flap’ your arms, imitating a chicken’s wings, and bob your head forwards and backwards.
A classic that many of us know and love, the YMCA is danced to the Village People’s anthem, YMCA. With your legs shoulder width apart you make the letters Y, M, C and A overhead using your arms. Repeat this for every chorus.
This beginner-friendly move starts with your feet wider than shoulder width. Bend your knees, put your hands on one knee, and straighten the opposite knee while turning the knee inward. This creates a booty pop that’s sure to get your fellow dancers’ attention.
