Top tips for a fun and romantic theatre date night

A date at the theatre is a great way to spend time with a loved one or get to know a new partner better. Not only is it a chance to experience the thrill of live performance together, but it’s also great for conversation, enabling you to connect by discussing plot twists or favourite moments. Of course, when most of us think of the theatre, we imagine the glamour of the West End shows in London - but your date needn’t be quite so extravagant. Here’s how to plan a fun and romantic theatre date night that doesn’t cost the earth.

Try going off-West End

While tickets to West End shows can often cost into the hundreds of pounds, seeing a show in one of the off-West End theatres can be much more affordable, enabling you to enjoy a fun night out without breaking the bank. These venues also tend to offer something a little different, either showcasing new talent or exploring challenging or controversial themes. Check out shows at venues like the Marylebone Theatre, Riverside Studios and the Menier Chocolate Factory. Make sure you agree which production you’d like to see beforehand - unless you’ve been together for ages and you know how to surprise your partner with something they’ll love.

Grab pre-show dinner

To make the most of your romantic night, why not go for pre-show drinks or dinner? There are usually plenty of bars and eateries close to theatres, with many of the restaurants offering a pre-theatre menu that can be served quickly and may even be discounted. Enjoying a meal together is a chance to set the stage for the night ahead with tasty food and conversation. Or head out for drinks beforehand, which allows you to explore some of the local bars and discover a new favourite.

Stay comfortable

It may seem obvious, but the more comfortable you feel on your date, the easier it will be to relax, particularly if it’s early on in your relationship. Wearing comfy clothes and shoes that make you feel confident will help you to enjoy the evening. You may also want to consider what you’ll be doing before or after the show. If you have some walking to do, go prepared for the curveballs the British weather may throw at you, and wear shoes that won’t give you blisters.

Book in advance

Whether you’re looking for West End shows on now or smaller productions that are currently playing, you’ll need to make sure your tickets are booked in advance. If you need tickets at shorter notice there is often availability for weekday performances, but if you want to go on a weekend, you’ll need to check dates with your partner and plan accordingly. Search ‘West End shows what’s on’ to find out what big productions are playing and determine availability, or browse the KX Tickets ‘What’s On’ page to discover a range of plays and musicals both on and off the West End.
