What not to do when taking your kids to the theatre

If you’re taking your kids to the theatre for the first time, you’ll need to plan your trip carefully. There are lots of considerations in terms of both the type of show and your travel arrangements, so in this guide we outline some common pitfalls and how to avoid them.

1. Don’t book something unsuitable

If you’re a parent who’s into theatre, you may be inclined to choose a show that you know you’ll enjoy. But will your kids enjoy it too? A trip to Miss Saigon, for example, wouldn’t be appropriate for young children due to some of the adult themes that are explored. Instead, book something they can engage with, like Starlight Express, which has plenty of upbeat songs and a narrative that will inspire younger audiences. Preschoolers, meanwhile, will love The Tiger Who Came to Tea, which is designed especially for little ones.

2. Don’t necessarily go to London

Although some of the best plays and musicals are based in London, you don’t necessarily have to take your kids to a West End theatre show if that means a lot of travel and expense. Many productions also tour UK theatres, giving you a chance to see them closer to home if London is too far or stretches your budget too much. Check your local venues before looking at listings further afield.

3. Don’t neglect planning

Planning is an important part of taking kids anywhere, especially if you’re travelling. Don’t assume, for example, that the train will have seats available or that there won’t be any transport delays. Instead, book tickets in advance so that you can sit together, and leave plenty of time to get to the theatre so that if the bus is late or a Tube station is closed, there’s no added stress on the day.

4. Don’t overlook their comfort

If you are treating your children to a performance of one of the best West End musicals, don’t risk them marring the experience with constant requests for food or drinks. Kids typically have more needs than adults, so you’ll want to ensure they will be comfortable throughout the show. Bring snacks, drinks and anything else they may need, such as ear defenders or a cuddly toy. If you think your child may need a booster seat, check with the venue beforehand to see if they can supply one.

5. Don’t forget to brief them

If it’s your child’s first trip to the theatre, a quick briefing beforehand can ensure everyone enjoys the performance. Have a chat with them about theatre etiquette and remind them that they shouldn’t call out or get up from their seat unless it’s encouraged by the actors.
